Learning Personalized Hand Engraving

Learning Personalized Hand Engraving

A couple weeks ago Joe and I learned the art of personalized hand engraving glass and metal items of all kinds. Personalized hand engraving makes both wedding and corporate gifts even more unique. Adding calligraphy to these items adds a very personal touch you can’t get with an engraving or etching machine.

We are now regularly hired for wine events, fragrance counter events and by popular engraving and jewelry shops because it’s hard to find engravers who can engrave oddly shaped items such as:

  • wine bottles
  • beer glasses and growlers
  • power tools
  • fragrance bottles
  • motorcycle parts
  • guns
  • knives
  • swords
  • mirrors
  • compacts
  • jewelry boxes
  • crystal bowls and glassware
  • golf clubs
  • urns
  • china and porcelain
  • marble
  • slate

Joe and I are very proud to be the first at Inkwell Designers to learn personalized glass and metal engraving. We’re excited to offer this unique service to our customers. We even plan on expanding and having two to three more engravers on our team by the end of the year.

Since taking the class, nothing is safe in the house. Take a look at some of my examples here. (I’ve even gave my mom a hand engraved wine bottle for her 81st birthday! She loved it.)

Wine bottle and fragrance bottle engraving pricing can be found on this page but please call 833 465 9311 for custom glass and metal gift items. We’d love to help make your next wedding or corporate gift a big hit!

Wedding Coloring Books, The Next New Trend?

June 21, 2016 By Desiree Colonna

Wedding Coloring BooksAre wedding coloring books the next new trend…for ADULTS?

How about a wedding coloring book invitation customized just for your wedding with your favorite quotes and/or song lyrics? A wedding monogram or one-page design people can color at their tables?

At Inkwell Designers, anything is possible!

We’ve just released our very own custom wedding coloring book line headed up by coloring book designer Vanessa Lowry. We are featuring 53 wedding themed designs that can be customized and created just for your wedding day.

Imagine guests sitting at their tables engrossed in coloring while waiting for dinner or for dancing to start. We’re talking about the adults here, not the kids.

Coloring books for adults are a big trend. The Washington Post states, “Nielsen Bookscan estimates that some 12 million were sold in 2015, a dramatic jump from the 1 million sold the previous year.” 5 of the top 15 books on Amazon.com are coloring books. There are even coloring groups popping up all over the globe to color and socialize for hours.

What makes this activity so calming and charming at the same time?

As psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman, co-author of the new book Wired to Create, phrased it, “It can provide people with a way to flex their creativity.”

Your wedding coloring book, monogram, or invitation can really make your wedding stand out. Guests not only get a fun activity to do, but something unique to take home and treasure forever.

Go on over to this page for pricing and details. Then call us to start creating your own special wedding coloring book.

Why Your Wedding Invitations Are So Important

June 11, 2016 By Desiree Colonna

Wedding Invitation Suite

I have been a professional wedding planner for close to 10 years. A question I get asked most by clients is, “Why are wedding invitations so important?”

Wedding invitations are often an afterthought in the planning process. Brides fantasize about their dress, the perfect photographer and spend hours tasting food from the best caterers. Wedding invitations are just a ‘fill in’ item in the planning process. In a recent article about what order you should book wedding vendors, wedding invitations were listed as ‘tier 3’ items. That’s the LAST tier in planning, right there with decorative lighting. The Knot lists hiring priority vendors as one of the first things to do after getting engaged, but wedding invitations are not mentioned anywhere.  I tend to disagree with this. Invitations should be a ‘tier 1’ item. In my years as a wedding planner, I have been an advocate of finding the perfect wedding invitation because they are so important.

But, why? Aren’t they just a piece of paper? They will get thrown away, won’t they? Why would I spend money on something that I send to other people?

Your wedding invitation is a keepsake for both you and your guests. There are so many wonderful ways to turn your wedding invitation into a timeless keepsake. You can create an ornament, a shadowbox; frame it, or anything you fancy. Your wedding guests are people that you love and care about, right? You would be surprised at how many of them treasure your invitation and turn it into a keepsake to display in their own home.

Will they get thrown away? More than likely, no. I still have wedding invitations from family members married over 10 years ago. I keep Save the Dates from each couple that I work with. Invitations are the first impression that guests have of your wedding. They set the guests’ expectation of your wedding. An elegant invitation on fine paper with beautiful calligraphy will signal your guests to expect an elegant, timeless wedding.  A bright colored, fun invitation with special photos of the couple means a fun and personalized wedding.

Why would I spend money on something I don’t keep, but send to other people? Your wedding is about you, but it’s not ALL about you! It’s about your guests. It’s about sharing your special day with those that you love and care about. The wedding invitation shows your guests that you want them at your wedding (obviously), but it also shows them that you put care and thought into what you were sending them. In a world full of e-mail, social media and technology snail mail is something of the past. Receiving a beautiful invitation in the mail is something your guests will treasure.
If you feel like wedding invitations are just another hassle to deal with during your wedding planning or a ‘minor’ detail I hope that you will consider these points. Your invitation is the first impression your guests will have of your wedding. It shows your guests you want them there and, I can promise you, it is something they will treasure for years to come!

Why People Connect with Atlanta Calligraphers

Connecting with Atlanta Calligraphers

When I was a little girl, my mom bought me a book on Old English Style Calligraphy, a pen and some ink. I practiced daily and was quite good. Then I got distracted by other things. (Probably Donny Osmond or a boy in class.) I left my hand lettering days far behind me.

About two years ago in Atlanta, immersed in a world where I found myself constantly connected to digital media, I longed to make art. Real art where I used a real brush, pen, watercolor and ink. I learned modern calligraphy online and was hooked. I became a teacher at the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art and started the first Atlanta Calligraphers Meetup.

Then I joined an online class and I found my tribe! There were many other Atlanta calligraphers hooked on the art of modern calligraphy and hand lettering. I couldn’t believe how many students and teachers there were out there. I was so blown away, I decided to represent calligraphy and lettering artists just as I had web designers and developers for the past 20 years. I was so excited, I even started doing calligraphy in my sleep! From my enthusiasm and excitement, I created Inkwell Designers.

I think calligraphy and hand lettering connect us with a raw place inside that longs for real, handwritten notes. Atlanta calligraphers want to touch paper and ink, not glass screens or keyboards. We’re writing a lot less than we ever did before. Calligraphy is becoming a lost art.

Handwriting gives us the power to connect, whether it’s to someone we love, someone who needs our help or even with a part of ourselves that needs a little boost once in a while.

I mean who isn’t impressed and excited by the lovely flowing lines of the letters and flourishes on an envelope in their mailbox? They just know it’s an invitation to a special event like a wedding, baby shower or graduation. How about a handwritten love letter?

The art of actually doing the writing is therapeutic. Look at the recent popularity of coloring books on Amazon. People are looking to connect with art all over the globe. Sharing our artwork on Instagram is another way both worlds cross over each other.

People connect with calligraphy simply because it’s beautiful and elegant in a world of pixels and screens. It means “beautiful writing” and that’s the truth of it. It’s an art that’s becoming more and more popular, especially with brides.

I’m so excited to work with some of the best calligraphy artists in Atlanta and around the country now. I consider myself very lucky and privileged to know people like Jessica Shubert and Sarah Barrett. I rediscovered my love for calligraphy, the written word and the art of hand lettering. Now I get to share it with the world!

Thanks for helping us get started in this space. I look forward to connecting you with the beautiful art of calligraphy!
